Caraval by Stephanie Garber

A fascinating game with glittering magic, dark secrets, and and the chance to win a wish.

The hype surrounding Caraval before and after it came out was huge and the synopsis really made it sound different and interesting. However, as I was reading, I felt like there were a lot of parts that were drawn out and dragged on with no real bearing on the plot. I wish there was more action and character development.

I liked Scarlett's character well enough but, felt like she lacked some depth. Her dedication to her sister was really genuine and I liked their relationship a lot, especially how they would do anything for one another. I only wish we had more actual face time with Tella to get to know her character more. Their father was so horrible but, served his role as the villain brilliantly. I hope he's dealt with in the next book. I'm also dying to learn more about the girls' mother.

I liked the romance and thought it was sweet. Even though there were a few times where Julian was lying and deceitful, his true motives were later on revealed and he somewhat redeemed himself. I'm interested to see what happens with Tella and the mystery man at the end.

As I said before this book wasn't bad, it just wasn't fantastic. I can't pinpoint what exactly was missing but, it just needed something more. That being said, I am looking forward to reading the sequel hopefully getting to know Tella a little more and seeing what happens next.
